When you stay at Quality Inn Hollywood, you’re just 15 minutes from one of the best ice-cream parlors in the world.

Opened in 1956, Jaxson’s Ice Cream Parlor has remained at the same location for nearly 70 years. Sundaes, parfaits, goblets, floats, malts, shakes – ice cream in every way! They’ll even sell you The Kitchen Sink. For $25, the parlor will fill an actual kitchen sink with about forty scoops of ice cream, a few sliced bananas and a bunch of other treats. There’s a four-person minimum on the Sink.

The inside walls of the shop are covered with old license plates. Remember penny candy? The building also houses one of the best old-fashioned candy stores you’ll ever see. In addition to spectacular ice-cream creations, Jaxson’s serves a full range of burgers, dogs, wings and entrees.

Other great ice-cream choices in Hollywood include:

Carvel Ice Cream Bakery

Started in 1929 as a one-truck ice cream operation, the founder of this company invented soft-serve ice cream. Now the company’s products are available at more than 500 franchise locations and more than 9,000 grocery stores. Carvel popularized the ice-cream cake in the 1970’s, introducing popular items such as Fudgie the Whale and Cookie Puss. The company also sells ice-cream bars and shakes.

Launched by a married couple in New York City in 1978, this brand is one of the few ice creams that doesn’t contain stabilizers such as guar gum, xanthan gum or carrageenan. Only egg yolks are used as stabilizers. Interestingly, the company’s name is meaningless. General Mills owns the brand now. The company as makes ice-cream bars, ice-cream cakes, sorbet, frozen yogurt and gelato.

Baskin Robbins

Founded in 1945 by a pair of brother-in-laws, Baskin Robbins has more than 7,000 retail stores around the world. It's created more than 1,000 flavors of ice cream over the years. “Not everyone likes all our flavors,” says founder Irv Baskin, “but each flavor is somebody’s favorite.” Mint Chocolate Chip and Pralines N Cream are two of the most popular. The company also offers ice-cream cakes.

Cold Stone Creamery

Serving “smooth and creamy super-premium ice cream,” this company was founded by a married couple in 1988. Their first store in Tempe, AZ, remains in business at its original location! The name comes from the granite slabs used to fold “mix ins” – candy, nuts or other edibles – into ice cream. Nearly 1,500 worldwide locations. The company offers cakes, shakes, smoothies, yogurt and sorbet.

Siciliano’s Frozen Custard

Frozen custard, invented in 1919 in New York City, has more egg yolks than regular ice cream. As a result of the added yolks and extra buttermilk, frozen custard is much more dense than regular ice cream. Siciliano’s is a small stand, with bench seating available outside. The stand also offers soft-serve ice cream, frozen custard cakes and pies, sherbets and sorbets.
